  • The Acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft

On January 18, Microsoft announced that it would acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in all-cash, a deal that sets a record for the amount of acquisition in the global gaming industry.

Since the two sides' business lines around the world, there is a need for the approval of 16 countries and regions, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and other regulatory authorities around the world. However, so far, only a few countries such as Brazil and Saudi Arabia have unconditionally approved the plan, and regulators in the gaming sector are still conducting strict reviews of the case.

  • Netflix Stepped into Gaming Sector 

In the fiscal year of 2022 after the release of the third quarter earnings, Netflix game studio director and vice president of the game department MiKe Verdu noted that Netflix's 55 new games are being developed, and the firm is also exploring cloud gaming products.

In October this year, Netflix set up a dedicated game studio and invited Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny to take the lead. Subsequent job postings also hinted that Netflix has plans to develop FPS or TPS-type 3A games.

  • TGA Annual Rewards by Falcom 

Elden Ring became the biggest winner, gaining the title of Game of the Year, which is also the second time for Falcom to obtain the TGA annual award after Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

On August 31, Japan's Kadokawa issued a statement agreeing to let Tencent subsidiary Sixjoy and Sony's SIE Tokyo use cash to buy new shares issued by Kadokawa's subsidiary FromSoftware. Following the completion of the transaction, Tencent and Sony will become the second and third largest shareholders of Falcom respectively. The funds will be used mainly to strengthen the ability to create and develop game IPs.
